Black Tea Hot Toddy Season!

It is Hot Toddy season for sure! A Nor‘easter is about to hit and it remains cold out West. Warm up after a chilly day with this one and sip into the sunset. Lots of options on how to prepare – you can make it with tea or not, as well as other spices. Keep it simple and it is an elegant hot drink. Or go ahead and spice it up. Either way, you will keep warm and cozy with this one!

Ingredients

  • ½ ounce dark rum

  • ½ ounce bourbon whiskey or rye

  • ½ ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice

  • 1 ounce honey syrup (see note below)

  • 3-4 ounces hot tea or hot water

  • Lemon peel for garnish

Optional Add-ins

  • 1 star anise

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 5 cloves

  • 1 tablespoon black tea (or 1 black tea bag)

Preparation

  • If you want to use the spices and tea, then start with a small pot, combine the water and spices.

  • Bring the water to just below boiling and remove it from the heat.

  • Add tea leaves and steep for 4 minutes.

  • Strain into a large mug. Save the cinnamon stick.

  • In a large cup or mug, mix together rum, whiskey, lemon juice and honey syrup.

  • Add the hot liquid, either the spiced tea or simple hot water, and stir.

  • Garnish with a lemon peel and cinnamon stick.

  • Serve and enjoy!

Note: Honey Syrup

  • 1:1 ratio warm water and honey. Simply thin the honey to a syrup. Straight honey is just too thick.
