Tahoe Traditions
This weekend marked the start to the annual wooden boat show, The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance. This event dates back to 1972 and is a combination of philanthropic fundraising, a big old social event, and a wonderful look back into Tahoe’s rich history. It is a two day affair with parties and events, all while about 70 wooden boats are exhibited and judged.
The Concours began at Chambers Landing, an historic establishment built in 1875 on the west shore of Lake Tahoe that is easier to get to by boat than car. It claims to be the oldest bar on the water in Lake Tahoe, and sidenote, is the home of a great drink, Chambers Punch. Not unlike the Wet Woody, it too is a slushy drink made with three rums.
The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance is now held at Obexer’s Boat Company, in Homewood, California, just a mile up the road from Chambers. So as with many things this year, The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance is virtual this year with none of the social elements. However that does allow folks from everywhere a chance to see the boats exhibited online (for several weeks) and in some cases even hear recordings of some of the vintage engines. You can look forward to next year (aren’t we all?) and soon will be able to purchase tickets to the 2021 Concours - think of it as a mixture of cocktails, Big Blue, mahogany, and Frank Sinatra - what fun! In the meantime, make a Chambers Punch and check out the boats online!
