This drink was popular in1940s L.A. and made a full revival about 10 years ago. The now infamous copper mug is used to keep the drink cold, and in theory, enhances the flavor and aroma of the drink. Don’t feel like you need a mug, but it does make it kind of fun.
The drink was created by John Martin and Jack Morgan, the owner of The Cock’n Bull, a restaurant in Hollywood’s Sunset Strip (which closed in 1987). They created the drink to promote vodka and ginger beer, as Americans at the time preferred whisky and beer. Martin headed up Heublein (which then owned Smirnoff) and looked to Jack Morgan to help create a vodka cocktail to compete. The Cock’n Bull made ginger beer. It was a perfect pairing and they put it in a copper mug to keep it cold. Voila! The Moscow Mule.
